Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of seventeen. Roman Gladiators, Their Arms, and Armor Much like todays football players or WWF wrestlers, Roman gladiators could win renown and fortune in the arenas. Modern sportsmen sign contracts; ancient ones made oaths. Injuries were common, and the life of a player was generally short. Unlike modern sports figures, however, gladiators were usually slaves or criminals: They were not expected to fight in wars or battles, but instead fought one-on-one (usually) as entertainment, in an arena. As a gladiator, a man could potentially raise his status and wealth if he was both popular and successful. Gladiators and Their Weapons Gladiators were often criminals and slaves, hired to provide entertainment in the Roman Circus or another arena.  There were many different types of gladiators, based on their clothing and weapons.  Weapons used by some gladiators included knives and swords, shields, and helmets.The use of the weapons was taught at a professional school called a ludus. Both the men and the weapons were owned (and rented out) by the head of the school.   Schools and Standing of the Gladiators Gladiators did not fight in the Roman army, but after the Spartacus revolt in 73 BCE, some were professionally trained to perform in the arena. Training schools (called ludus gladiatorius) taught prospective gladiators. The schools- and the gladiators themselves- were owned by a lanista, who would lease the men out for upcoming gladiatorial events. If a gladiator was killed during the battle, the lease would convert to a sale and the price might be as high as 50 times the rent. There were many types of gladiators in ancient Rome, and they were trained at the ludus by a specialist (doctores or magistrii) skilled in that form of fighting. Each type of gladiator had his own set of traditional weapons and armor. Some gladiators- like the Samnites- were named for opponents of the Romans; other types of gladiators, like the Provacator and Secutor, took their names from their functions: challenger and pursuer. Often, certain types of gladiators fought only specific foes, because the best type of entertainment was thought to be an evenly matched pair with contrasting fighting styles. Weapons and Armor of the Roman Gladiators Most of the information about Roman gladiators comes from Roman historians, as well as mosaics and tombstones. One source is the Oneirocritica of Artemidorus, a professional diviner of the second century CE Rome. The essay Ways of Seeing portrays the idea that every person views the world differently with different ideas about what they see. A major thing that every person views differently is what, how, and who they fall in love with. The events in everyone's life effects the lens life is viewed through. This lens chooses the people everyone is attracted too, and chooses who every person loves. If everyone viewed the world the same exact way wouldn't everyone love the same people? And wouldn't that leave some people without love? If seeing comes before words, then does that mean that love at first sight is real? Berger used major themes in Ways of Seeing, one including the idea that everyone sees love differently. â€Å"To look is an act of choice† (Berger 141). This quote's significa nce to this theme is when a person is attracted to another, it is obvious that no is perfect. The idea is that people have the choice of look into every small flaw of another, or there is the choice to love even the flaws. Seeing does not always have to be done through the eyes. When it comes to loving â€Å"seeing† is a term that is used in multiple ways. â€Å"Seeing† when it comes to love means much more that seeing what is on the outside of a person, it comes to seeing the inside of the person also. Seeing is a loose term that describes the way you view someone as a whole, and seeing both the good and bad and still loving a person, is a choice. People see through their eyes to find beauty, and people see through their hearts to find what love is to them. When every person is born they have a certain accuracy of vision. Some people have impaired vision and require glasses, while others are born with a perfect 20/20. Although some are born with accurate vision and ot hers not so much, vision is something that as the years go on and as every person ages it can change. This idea of changing vision is a parallel idea with the idea that the way you love someone is constantly changing. When love first occurs it is normally very happy, but as time goes on you begin to understand the type of person the one you love is. The way your vision changes is the way your love can change. Maybe that is way divorce has become very common in modern days. Although at once you had 20/20 vision of a person and would never think the love could fade, maybe your vision becomes blurred over the years until you cannot see the way you used too. Cannot see through the lens you used to fall in love with. Other times even after the years go on and the vision you have of a person begins to blur, the choice of remember what you once saw is what keeps the love strong. It really just depends on the two people who's visions is going through the changes. â€Å"Our perception or ap preciation of an image depends also upon our own way of seeing† (Berger 142). When it comes to love everyone loves different people, because every person appreciates and views other people differently. Sometimes appreciating what a person would do for you due to the fact that they care about you so much is what causes you to view that person with difference. Cultural references could be cashed in to enhance the monetary value of a commercial project, and the brokers of culture became powerful elite. Under these circumstances, ?lmmakers – like their counterparts in music distribution, art exhibition and liter ary promotion – could bene?t from their skills as producers of artifacts of wide appeal and their proximity to intellectual circles to become in?uential middlemen† (Braester, 2006, p. 551). The 20-21st centuries brought the new opportunities to make experiments. The popularity the television gained attracted young generations to the field of art. Now the number of musicians is growing every day as the youth is fond of music very much. With the elimination of many prejudices the Chinese society has been always full of, new opportunities to make different experiments appeared, thus new waves appeared and the development of the music accelerated. The development of technology does not bring benefits to all the fields of media. Some fields became less popular, because other fields appeared. One field that simply could not benefit from this development is the newspaper industry. It is no need to say that the development of technology made newspapers and journals useless. How ever, China can be called an exception. Chinese people still consider newspapers and journals to be the main sources of information. There are five types of popular newspapers that people like very much: evening newspapers, business issues, weekly informative newspapers and law newspapers. Speaking about the evolution of newspapers since 1978, it is essential to mention that the newspapers and journals changed much, became bright and informative. The number of newspapers and journals has also increased. In 1980 there were 80 newspapers in the country and now their number increased to 2,200. The whole number of journals and newspapers in China now grew to many millions due to new economic opportunities, which allow to open private publishing houses. Chinese population received more opportunities for self-expression. Globalization brought man y changes to all the areas of media.
